Bjork music biography continued...

and released her first album of traditional Icelandic folk songs when she was only 11. Throughout her teens, Bjork played in a number of bands, finally forming a band called the Sugarcubes, which won a cult following in the U.S. and U.K. thanks to their 1988 album, Life's Too Good, followed by 1992's collection of dance remixes, It's It. In 1993, Bjork released her first solo album, simply called Debut, which went on to sell nearly three million copies worldwide. The release featured two Top 20 singles, "Human Behaviour" and "Big Time Sensuality" and garnered Bjork album of the year honors from NME magazine and International Female Solo Artist and Newcomer at the BRIT Awards; Debut went gold in the U.S. and platinum in the U.K. After relocating to London, Bjork released 1995's Post, which outsold her first album thanks to innovative collaborations with several prominent techno artists. Bjork experimented on Telegram and Homogenic, with both albums released in 1997. In the spring of 2000, Bjork was named Best Actress by jurors at the Cannes Film Festival for her work in Lars Von Trier's Palme d'Or-winning Dancer in the Dark. Bjork, who had also scored the film, earned further acclaim in early 2001, when she and von Trier were nominated for a Best Song Academy Award for I've Seen It All. She made fashion history when she wore her infamous "swan dress" while performing the song at the 2001 Academy Award Ceremony, securing a place in pop culture history.

Bjork continued to experiment musically, releasing Vespertine (2001) and Medulla (2004), which employed the vocal skills of throat singer Tagaq, hip hop beatboxer Rahzel, Japanese beatboxer Dokaka, avant-rocker Mike Patton, Soft Machine drummer/singer Robert Wyatt, and several choirs. Björk's sixth full-length studio album, Volta, was released in May 2007. Primarily written and produced by Björk herself, it featured ten new tracks and featured electronic, kora, pipa, and brass compositions. Nominated for 13 Grammy Awards over her career, Bjork has also been ranked #36 on VH1's "The 100 Greatest Women in Rock and Roll" and #8 on MTV's "22 Greatest Voices in Music".
