as vocalist Jake Blues and Dan Aykroyd as harpist Elwood Blues. Originally the duo performed to warm up SNL studio audiences, but once they were featured in a sketch on the late-night live television show, they took on a life of their own. It didn't hurt that Jake and Elwood were backed by top session men like guitarist Steve Cropper, bassist Donald 'Duck' Dunn, and Matt 'Guitar' Murphy. The Blues Brothers recorded their first album, Briefcase Full of Blues, in 1978 while opening for comedian Steve Martin in Los Angeles. The album went platinum, and featured Top 40 hit covers of 'Soul Man' and 'Rubber Biscuit.' In 1980, The Blues Brothers motion picture, directed by John Landis, was released, featuring cameos by Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, Carrie Fisher, Frank Oz, Steven Spielberg, Joe Walsh, John Candy, and Paul Reubens. The Blues Brothers also toured that year to promote the movie. Jake and Elwood released their second LP, Made in America, which included the Top 40 hits "Gimme Some Lovin' and "Who's Making Love." In 1981, The Best of the Blues Brothers was released, further solidifying their massive popularity; however, on March 5, 1982, Belushi died in Hollywood of an accidental drug overdose, and the Blues Brothers' story came to an end. Or did it?

Due to popular demand and a sense of nostalgia that would not die, the Blues Brothers regrouped in 1988 as the Blue Brothers Band consisting of former members, Cropper, Dunn, Murphy, and others for a world tour, often backing singer Eddie Floyd. In 1992, they even released a new album-- Red White and Blues, which featured a guest appearance from Aykroyd/Elwood. Around the same time, Aykroyd also mounted his House of Blues franchise, an international chain of upscale blues clubs; he, actor John Goodman, and Belushi's brother Jim also appeared on occasion in a new Blues Brothers lineup. And in 1998, the Blues Brothers 2000 movie was released. Although it did not get a warm commercial or critical reception, the Blues Brothers legend lives on.
