Bob Seger music biography continued...
and woman. born May 6, 1945, in Dearborn, Michigan, Seger began his musical career in 1961 in Detroit as a member of a band called The Decibels, where he picked up a loyal local following that would increase over the next several years. After forming a band called the Bob Seger System in 1968, he signed with Capitol Records and after that with Palladium, but didn't have much success on either label. In 1974 Seger formed the Silver Bullet Band, and the following year joined up with Columbia again to release Beautiful Loser, an album that spawned the hit single "Katmandu." In April 1976 Seger and the Silver Bullet Band had an even bigger commercial breakthrough with the album Live Bullet. The album stayed on the Billboard charts for 168 weeks, peaking at #34 which was Seger's highest charting album at the time. Seger finally achieved his indisputable commercial breakthrough with his October 1976 album Night Moves. The title song "Night Moves" became a #4 hit single on the Billboard pop singles chart as well as a heavy album-oriented rock airplay mainstay. The album also contained "Mainstreet", a #24 hit ballad, as well as the anthem "Rock and Roll Never Forgets." Night Moves was Seger's first Top 10 album in the Billboard 200, and heralded the beginning of a string of Grammy-nominated albums and hits including, "Old Time Rock and Roll," "Against the Wind," "Fire Lake," and "You'll Accomp'ny Me" that would stretch into the 80s.
Although Seger's popularity began to wane in the early 80s, he did gave us such memorable hits as "Like a Rock," which became well-known through its use in Chevrolet truck commercials, and "Shakedown," popularized on the soundtrack to Beverly Hills Cop II. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 15, 2004. Fellow Detroit rocker Kid Rock gave the induction speech and Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm proclaimed that date Bob Seger Day in his honor. Seger's first new album in 11 years, titled Face the Promise, was released in September 2006, stayed on the Billboard charts for months and has sold over 1 million copies to date, proving that rock and roll fans do never forget.
