Bobby Brown music biography continued...

that eventually morphed into the successful group New Edition. Brown was interested in a solo career, however, and left the group in 1986. He released his debut solo album, King of Stage, in 1987, but wouldn't break out until 1988's Don't Be Cruel, which featured Brown's first experimentation with new jack swing and resulted in the hit single "My Prerogative" which went all the way to number one toward the end of the year. Other hit singles off the album included the ballad "Roni," the dance tune "Every Little Step" (which showed off Brown's rapping skills), and another ballad "Rock Wit'cha". All three hit the Top Ten in 1989, with the former two both making it all the way to number three. Don't Be Cruel topped the album charts and sold a staggering seven million copies, making Brown a superstar. In 1990, Brown wrote the theme song for Ghostbusters II, "On Our Own," which proved to be a number two smash. In 1992 Brown married superstar diva Whitney Houston, and came out with a new album, Bobby, that included "Humpin Around," a smash on both the pop and R&B charts. At the time, it seemed that nothing Bobby Brown did could go wrong.

In 1993, Georgia police arrested Brown for an overly suggestive stage performance, an incident that would prove to be the beginning of Brown's numerous run-ins with the law due to drug and alcohol abuse and marital woes. In between his arrests, Brown found time to record with the fully reunited New Edition, whose comeback album, Home Again, entered the charts at number one. Brown toured with the group, but departed for good when the tour was over. Also in 1997, Brown released his fourth solo album, Forever, a commercial disappointment which failed to even break the Top 50. As his legal troubles continued, Brown's music career seemed to be on hold. There were hopes for a Brown comeback in 2002 when he appeared on the lead single "Thug Lovin'" from rapper Ja Rule's third studio album The Last Temptation, but he never made it back to his previous levels of success. He joined a new group in 2008 because after all, it was his prerogative.
