singing at age 15 when she tried out for the high school musical, Meet Me in St. Louis, and received the lead role. She worked as a nanny and an aspiring singer-songwriter prior to auditioning for American Idol's seventh season in Philadelphia. For her audition, White sang "Like a Star" and received a unanimous pass to the Hollywood round. During the Hollywood week, White performed "Beautiful" by Carole King, accompanying herself on piano. After that performance, judges noted that White reminded them of a young Carly Simon or Carole King. She went on to accompany herself on the piano for several performances, with the judges proclaiming that she was one of the top female contestants. White had a slip up on the Andrew Lloyd Webber night when three lines into her performance of "You Must Love Me", she apologized, stopped the band, and re-started the song from the beginning. But White was voted safe the next night. She made it to the Top 5 and was then eliminated from American Idol on April 30, 2008.

Post-Idol White has been quite busy. Songs From the Attic, an album which she recorded on an independent label in 2005, has been re-released on White's Web site and on iTunes, where it peaked at #19 on the Top 100 Albums Chart, #6 on the Top 100 Pop Albums Chart and #8 on the Top 10 Album chart in Canada. White will also be a part of the American Idols LIVE! Tour 2008, during which she will be singing "Let It Be" by the Beatles, "1234" by Feist, and "Yellow" by Coldplay (a tune that also appears on her own album). When asked on American Idol with whom she would like to do a duet if made possible, she named John Mayer. She also cites Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood as her favorite former American Idol winners. Her fans certainly think White compares favorably to them, too!
