and Louis on bass - got their first break backing popular R&B acts in their hometown of Los Angeles. Their reputations increased, and they landed jobs in Billy Preston's touring band when Preston was at his commercial peak. Quincy Jones then hired the brothers to tour Asia with him, ultimately leading to Jones assisting them in obtaining a deal with A&M Records and agreeing to produce their debut album, Look Out for #1, which was released in 1976 and spawned a number one R&B and number three pop hit with "I'll Be Good to You." The duo's second effort, Right on Time, produced R&B chart topper "Strawberry Letter 23" and "Runnin' for Your Lovin." The brothers came back in 1978 with Blam !, which yielded "Ain't We Funkin' Now," while the follow-up, Light Up the Night produced the #1 dance hit "Stomp." The duo split up in 1982 to focus on solo careers, but reunited in 1984 and released Out of Control; it did not equal their past success, but got them another R&B hit with "You Keep Me Coming Back." They recorded Kickin' in 1988, and co-wrote Tomorrow with Siedah Garrett for Quincy Jones' Back on the Block release, which also included a remake of I'll Be Good to You with Ray Charles and Chaka Khan. In 2002, the Brothers Johnson went on a reunion tour around the US, which was met with much enthusiasm by fans and critics alike who relished the return to the hey day of Funkadelala.
