of a Kassel-born German, Marlene, who worked in a bank, and David Willis, an American soldier. Willis' father took his family back to Penns Grove, New Jersey, after his discharge from the army, and Willis eventually lit out for New York City and later Los Angeles in search of an acting career. His big break came in 1986 when he was cast opposite Cybil Sheppard in the TV comedy/drama Moonlighting. At the height of his Moonlighting fame, Willis released an album of R&B covers called Return of Bruno, which peaked at #14 on the Billboard 200 album chart. The first single, "Respect Yourself," received considerable airplay, peaking at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Another single, "Under the Boardwalk," peaked at #2 in the UK and became the 12th bestselling single of 1987. Willis followed in 1989 with, If It Don't Kill You, It Just Makes You Stronger, a collection of blues and swing covers, off the Motown label. In 2001, Polygram came out with Classic Bruce Willis: The Universal Masters Collection.
