Jay-Z. In 1990, Busta formed the Hip Hop crew Leaders of the New School with fellow MCs C.
Brown, Dinco D, and Cut Monitor Milo. Rhymes received much praise and attention following the group’s collaboration with
A Tribe Called Quest on the single “
Scenario”. The obvious fan preference over Busta created conflict within the group and eventually led to their breakup in 1993.
Signed to Elektra Records, Busta released his solo debut, The Coming in March 1996. The album performed impressively on the charts peaking at number six on the Billboard 200. The signature single “Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check” initiated his rise to successful commercial stature. His sophomore release When Disaster Strikes... duplicated his popularity with the hit singles “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See”, “Dangerous”, and “Turn It Up (Remix)/Fire It Up”. The following year Rhymes’ side project crew Flipmode Squad which included Rah Digga, Rampage, Lord Have Mercy, Spliff Star, and Baby Sham, issued their debut The Imperial Album. The 1998 album E.L.E. (Extinction Level Event): The Final World Front is considered to be Busta’s finest release comprising of the widely popular singles “What’s It Gonna Be?!” featuring Janet Jackson and “
Gimme Some More”. The record peaked in the second position on the Billboard Top Hip Hop chart and at number twelve on the Billboard 200. Anarchy, the 2000 release featuring “
Get Out” and “
Fire”, proved to be the rapper’s final album with Elektra. Meanwhile, Busta made his acting debut in the remake of the blaxploitation film
Shaft.
In 2001, Genesis saw release under the new label J Records featuring the smash hit “Pass the Courvoisier” and was complemented with the issuance of Rhymes’ first greatest hits compilation,
Total Devastation: The Best Of. His sixth studio album It Ain’t Safe No More spawned the sensational “I Know What You Want” featuring Mariah Carey and “Make It Clap”. Busta left J Records in 2004 and signed to Dr. Dre’s label Aftermath Entertainment releasing The
Big Band in 2006. With his trademark dreadlocks gone, the change in appearance was symbolical to the significant modification in Rhymes’ evolving musical style. The album became his first number one and has sold over 2 million copies worldwide to date. Singles “Touch It” and “I Love My B****” featuring
Kelis and will.i.am. have topped the rap charts.
