The best way to be successful in this whole music business is to build yourself up as a brand. The rest is cake.

Cake music biography continued...

John McCrea, guitarist Greg Brown, trumpeter Vince DiFiore, bassist Shon Meckfessel and drummer Frank French. In 1993, the band released their debut single, "Rock 'n' Roll Lifestyle." Although self-released, the single managed to hit number 31 on the US Modern Rock Tracks. After the moderate radio success of their first single, Cake released their debut album entitled Motorcade of Generosity. Eventually, they signed a deal with Capricorn Records, who in turn released the album nationally. In 1996, Cake released their sophomore effort, Fashion Nugget, which contained the breakthrough single, "The Distance." The tune dominated alternative radio in the fall of 1996 and turned into an unlikely sporting-event anthem. Mostly on the strength of "The Distance," and a bizarre cover of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive," Fashion Nugget charted in the Top 40 and sold over a million copies. Eager not to be classified as one hit wonders, Cake released their third studio album, Prolonging the Magic, in 1998. This album contained the hit single "Never There" which reached number 1 on the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks, powered the album to platinum status and proved that no matter how irreverent Cake were, they were an outfit with serious musical intentions.

Cake signed a new deal with Columbia, and debuted in 2001 with their fourth overall album, Comfort Eagle, which became their highest-charting yet at number 13. The lead single "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" was a major hit on alternative radio stations, climbing to number 7 on the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks, and was used as the theme song to the television series Chuck. Cake's fifth album, Pressure Chief, was released in October 2004. It contained the moderately successful singles "No Phone" and a cover of the Bread song "The Guitar Man." Cake released a compilation, B-Sides and Rarities, in October 2007. It was the band's first album on its own label, Upbeat Records. In 2008 the band removed their studio from dependence on Sacramento, California's power grid by installing a system of solar panels, announcing that subsequent albums would be "recorded using 100% solar energy." It was just another confirmation that Cake are a band that goes their own way.
