(born René Pérez Joglar) and producer Visitante (Eduardo José Cabra Martínez). The duo landed their first record deal with White Lion, a small reggaeton label in partnership with Sony BMG, after impressing record executives with their demo tapes. After generating some buzz on Puerto Rico radio with lead single "Se Vale To-To," White Lion released Calle 13 in November 2005. The album debuted at #6 on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart; however, the sales were heavily Puerto Rico-based. That all began to change in late summer 2006, when a second single, "¡Atrévete Te, Te!," began getting airplay in the U.S., beginning in Southern California. At about the same time, the duo got more exposure when the chart topping Nelly Furtado performed a duet with Residente on a new version of "No Hay Igual." In September 2006, Calle 13 received even greater recognition, when they were tapped for three Latin Grammy nominations for Best New Artist, Best Short-Form Video, and Best Urban Album -- all of which were later won. In addition, there was the announcement of three nominations for MTV Latin America Awards, and a performance with Furtado on the awards show itself. Calle 13 were asked to perform with Furtado on a new MTV channel targeting young Latinos. By the end of 2006, the album Calle 13 was a Top Ten success, and the duo were on top of the Latin and English-speaking worlds.



Residente and Visitante released their second album, Residente o Visitante, in 2007. It garnered considerable attention upon its release, knocking Jennifer Lopez from the number one spot on the Latin album chart. In October 2008, they followed with the album, Los de Atrás Vienen Conmigo, which found the duo experimenting with the musical styles of candombe and banda. The album has been nominated for five Latin Grammy Awards including Album of the Year, a clear indication that Calle 13 is the place to be.
