Carly Simon music biography continued...
in New York City. Her father was Richard L. Simon (co-founder of Simon & Schuster, Inc.), a pianist who often played Chopin and Beethoven at home and encouraged his children's musical aspirations. Simon's career began with a short-lived attempt with her sister Lucy as the folk duo The Simon Sisters, but Carly wouldn't truly emerge until a 1971 self-titled debut album off Elektra Records. The album contained her breakthrough top-ten hit "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" — and was followed quickly by a second album, Anticipation, the title cut from which also climbed the charts. Simon scored the biggest success of her career with the classic 1972 global smash "You're So Vain". It hit #1 on the US Pop and Adult Contemporary charts and sold nearly two million 45s in the US alone. It was one of the decade's biggest hits and catapulted Carly's breakthrough album No Secrets to #1 on the US album charts—where it stayed for six consecutive weeks—and to million-selling Platinum status which was unusual for a female artist in the early 1970s. "You're So Vain" received Grammy Award nominations for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance Female. In 1972, Simon also married singer/songwriter James Taylor and began to rack up a series of bestselling albums, culminating in 1977's international smash, "Nobody Does It Better" from the James Bond movie The Spy Who Loved Me, and 1978's "You Belong To Me." By now it was clear that Simon belonged in music's pantheon.
After a divorce from James Taylor and a period of decline in the early 80's, Simon came back strong with 1987's "Coming Around Again" and 1988's Grammy- and Oscar-winning "Let the River Run" from the film Working Girl. Her iconic stature now secure, Simon now began releasing albums at a more relaxed pace, which allowed her to be more adventurous in her writing and creativity. Following a bout with breast cancer, Simon resumed recording and critical and commercial success followed. Simon remains an integral part of the music industry to this day, with a fan base as wide as ever.
