Chevelle Biography |
The hard-rock band Chevelle formed in Illinois in 1995. While it released several well-received albums on its own, the band rose to national acclaim in 2002 with the release of the album Wonder What’s Next? and the single, “Send the Pain Below.”
Having toured with with Ozzfest and shared bills with heavy rock acts such as Audioslave, Filter and Sevendust, there was little question about the band’s rock credentials. However, the band was tangled in some controversy regarding its perceived image as a Christian rock band.
The group’s early albums were released by a label with ties to a Christian music label, which led to the band’s albums being available in Christian bookstores. The group was also nominated for several Dove Awards early in its career (an award similar to a Grammy for the Christian music community).
As a result, the band has been criticized by some devout fans for touring with Ozzfest and other non-Christian-themed events. For its part, Chevelle has stated in numerous interviews that it was never meant to be a Christian band and that the group was mislabeled.
Regardless, the band has been a crossover hit, paving the way for bands such as Switchfoot.
