Chicane music biography continued...

classical guitar and piano, but was more interested in melodic dance music as a young man. In 1996, he released his first single, "Offshore" on an independent UK dance label founded by a college friend and it catapulted to #12 on the UK Singles Chart, the top 40 in multiple European countries, and #5 on the US Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play charts upon its re-release in 1997. "Sunstroke", the follow-up single, attained similar popularity and chart numbers and helped Chicane's debut album, Far from the Maddening Crowds, to become a commercial breakthrough. In 1999, Chicane released the single, "Saltwater," which surpassed all previous tracks, reaching #6 on the UK charts and #1 on all five major UK dance charts. After producing a radio remix of Bryan Adams's "Cloud Number Nine", Chicane offered Adams the vocal position on the song "Don't Give Up". The vocals Adams recorded were subsequently heavily processed through a vocoder so as to play down the rock music edge. The song was selected by BBC Radio 1 as the first "Essential New Tune" of the new millennium, and it would go on to be Chicane's biggest hit, debuting at #1 on the UK Charts, #3 on the US Charts, and high positions across Europe. It was Chicane's desire to breathe new life into dance music, and he had certainly accomplished that.

Over the next few years Chicane was consumed by a legal dispute with his record label and an aborted album release, but he resurfaced in 2006 with the single, "Stoned in Love", on Globe Records through Universal Music Group, featuring singer Tom Jones on vocals. The track received substantial UK TV promotion, but Chicane ended up parting ways with Universal as well, opting instead to produce on his own record label. Subsequent albums included 2007's Somersault and 2008's Best of Compilation, which served as a perfect reminder that Chicane had achieved all of his musical goals.
