St. Louis, Missouri native Chingy made his debut in 2003 with his triple platinum album Jackpot. His distinctive Southern drawl and signature slur anchored the smash hits “Right Thurr”, “Holidae In” featuring Snoop Dogg and Ludacris, and “One Call Away” featuring J-Weav. Born Howard Bailey, Jr. on March 9, 1980, the young star grew up listening to Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, and the Temptations and eventually began rapping in his late teens. year 2002 marked the beginning of his singing career as he embarked on rapper Nelly’s tour as the supporting act. Shortly afterwards he was signed to Ludacris’ label Disturbing Tha Peace and released his catchy debut single.
His sophomore album Powerballin’ followed in 2004 under Capitol Records as he was dropped by his previous label. With a more rap influenced sound, as opposed to pop, the album delivered the noteworthy single, “Balla Baby”. The album also included the collaborated songs “Don’t Worry” which features Janet Jackson, “Leave Wit Me” featuring R.Kelly, and “All the Way to St. Lou” with David Banner and Nate Dogg. Chingy’s third record, Hoodstar, produced by Jermaine Dupri, Timbaland, the Trak Starz, Mannie Fresh, and Mr. Collipark, was released in September 2006. The CD features two sides, the crunk influenced “Hood” and the club-oriented “Star” to represent the different musical styles of the album. The lead single “Pullin’ Me Back” which features Tyrese peaked at number one on the R&B and Rap charts.
