Christina Aguilera Biography (Continued) |
facet which was heavily criticized by the media. Aguilera’s newest effort, Back to Basics which features the smash single “Ain’t No Other Man”, has critics raving about her 1940s Hollywood Glamour look and jazzy sound.
Born in Staten Island, New York, on December 18, 1980, Christina began displaying her vocal skills at a young age. Following her parents divorce, she moved to her grandmother’s home in Rochester, Pennsylvania with her mother and sister. Performing in various talent shows and competitions around Pittsburgh, she quickly became known as “the little girl with the big voice”. On March 15, 1990 she made her television debut performing Etta James’ song “A Sunday Kind of Love” on Star Search. Although she did not win, she continued to pursue her dream of becoming a professional singer. In 1993, she joined the cast of The New Mickey Mouse Club along with fellow pop stars Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and JC Chasez, as well as actress Keri Russell.
Her solo music career began to flourish when she recorded “Reflection” for the Disney animated film Mulan in 1998. RCA Records recognized her talent and immediately signed her to the label, releasing her eponymous premiere the following year. The album debuted at number one owing its instant success to the leading hit single “Genie in a Bottle”. Towards the end of 1999, the singer was recognized as Best New Artist winning the Grammy Award for that category. Aguilera’s scandalous side began to transpire with the release of her third number one hit single “Come on Over (All I Want Is You) which displayed slightly sexual content. By the time she issued Stripped in 2002, Christina emerged into the full blown provocative “Xtina”. While the first single, “Dirrty”, proved to be a disappointment on the music charts, its accompanying video on the other hand, was a huge hit on MTV. The subsequent softer single “Beautiful” earned a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2003. The album failed to perform as her vocal talent was dismissed due to her new loathed image.
On November 19, 2005, she married her boyfriend of three years, music executive Jordan Bateman. Their relationship is believed by many to have transformed Christina into the polished version of herself that she exudes today. The long awaited album, Back to Basics saw release in August 2006 debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 and has been received with incredible praise by both fans and critics. Christina describes the album as a modern take on jazz, blues and soul from the 20s, 30s and 40s.
