With her alluring soft and sultry singing style, Colbie Caillat emerged from the pages of MySpace to monumental fame as a singer/songwriter of incredible talent and appeal. Colbie Caillat was born May 28, 1985, in Newbury Park, California, and grew up steeped in music. Her father was a noted audio engineer and producer, who had a hand in Fleetwood Mac's multimillion-selling albums from the late '70s. o. In 2005, Caillat posted a few of her recordings on MySpace, but they received little response during the first few months. Shortly after the song "
Bubbly" was added to her profile, her MySpace page started receiving thousands of hits thanks to a buzz that was building through word of mouth. In October, 2006 Rolling Stone touted her as one of the top female artists on MySpace after she had amassed more than 6,200 friends on the popular social-networking site. Ultimately, Caillat’s page garnered some 3 million visits and the record companies came calling.
Caillat signed with Universal Republic in early 2007. She entered the recording studio with her longtime collaborators—songwriter Jason Reeves and producer Mikal Blue (
Carrie Underwood,
Five For Fighting) to produce her debut album,
Coco, which was released in July of 2007. Initial response to the collection was overwhelming, as Coco topped the iTunes chart and debuted at #5 on the Billboard Top 200, while "Bubbly" became the iTunes Single of the Week. She spent part of 2007 on the road, playing to big crowds as the opening act for
Lifehouse and The
Goo Goo Dolls on their U.S. tour. In May 2008, Caillat recorded a duet with
Jason Mraz, called "Lucky," on his album, We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things. The same month, Caillat recorded a cover of the song "
Kiss the Girl" from The Little Mermaid for Disney's DisneyMania vol. 6 CD. A great song, says Colbie Caillat, should lift your heart, warm the soul and make you feel good. If her first offerings are any indication, Caillat is sure to make a habit of making many more great tunes.
