Collective Soul music biography continued...
Ed Roland (lead vocals/keyboards/guitars), guitarists Dean Roland and Joel Kosche, and rhythm section Will Turpin (bass/percussion) and Shane Evans (drums/percussion). Their debut album was released in 1993 on an Atlanta indie label and was popular enough to prompt a deal with Atlantic. In 1994, their major label debut, Hints, Allegations, and Things Left Unsaid, yielded the tune "Shine" which went through the roof thanks to heavy rotation on MTV. The band was asked to perform at the Woodstock 1994 festival and toured extensively all across North America, almost overnight going from playing very small pubs to large amphitheaters and in some cases small arenas. Collective Soul's self-titled second album arrived the following year, was certified triple platinum, and remained on the Billboard 200 for an incredible 76 weeks. Hit singles from Collective Soul included US Rock Chart #1 hits "December," "Where The River Flows," and "The World I Know", #2 hit "Gel", and a top-ten hit "Smashing Young Man". The album earned widespread radio play across all mainstream formats, reaching beyond the conventional rock radio. As a result Collective Soul's sophomore effort brought them the attention of pop enthusiasts as well.
After a protracted legal battle with their former manager, Collective Soul came back with 1997's disappointing Disciplined Breakdown, but they returned to top form with 1999's Dosage, which yielded "Heavy" a tune that spent 15 weeks at #1 on the Mainstream Rock chart. Other hit singles off the album included "Run", "Needs", and "Tremble For My Beloved." Collective Soul's next album, Blender (2000) appealed more to pop audiences, even featuring a duet with Elton John, and wasn't as successful as its predecessor. After a greatest hits collection, the band went on hiatus until 2004, when they released Youth, which appealed to the adult contemporary market. They have continued to perform and record since, recently releasing Rabbit (2009) another successful stab at the adult contemporary market.
