Conway Twitty music biography continued...

Point, Mississippi. The Jenkins family moved to Arkansas when Jenkins was 10 years of age, and it was there that Jenkins put together his first singing group, the Phillips County Ramblers. He was drafted into the army after high school, but when he returned he made a concerted effort to get into music and went on to have success as a rock and roll artist on the MGM label with tunes like "It's Make Believe" and "Danny Boy." Twitty, who took his stage name from two towns he spotted on a map, had his heart set on country music however. His first few country albums were met with country DJs refusing to play them because he was well known as a rock-n-roll singer. He finally broke free with his first number one country song, "Next In Line" in November 1968. In 1970, Conway recorded and released his biggest hit ever, "Hello Darlin," which spent four weeks at the top of the country chart. In 1971 he released his first hit duet with Loretta Lynn, "After the Fire Is Gone". It was a success, and many more followed. Conway and Loretta (as they were known in their act), won four consecutive Country Music Association awards for vocal duo (1972-75). In 1973, Twitty's solo tune, "You've Never Been This Far Before", reached the top of the country charts and also crossed over onto the pop charts, with some pop DJs refusing to play it because of its sensual lyrics. Of course, that made Twitty and even bigger star.

Twitty would go on to hold the record for the most #1 singles of any country act with fifty-five number ones on all trade charts. The record would hold until 2008. Twitty died of a stomach aneurysm in 1993, just after completing an album entitled Final Touches. Though it might have been his final touch, it was nowhere near the end of the line for his music, which still resonates among country fans to this day. Twitty was formally inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999.
