Crazy Frog music biography continued...

who began recording his impressions of internal combustion motors in the late 90s. After he performed them on a television show, the impressions were posted on the Internet and became a popular among file-sharers. Fellow Swede Erik Wernquist, a computer animator, heard Malmedahl's impressions in 2000 and came up with the idea to couple Malmedahl's sound of a moped motor with a bluish-gray anatomically correct animation he called the Annoying Thing. He posted it on his website, where it also became a popular Internet attraction. Soon after, the two Swedes joined forces to refine the character. In 2004, the German-based Jamba! group licensed the animation and sound for distribution as a mobile phone ringtone. They accompanied the release of the ringtone with a barrage of advertising. Now known as Crazy Frog, it soon became the most recognizable commercially available ringtone in the United Kingdom. Crazy Frog's popularity peaked in the spring and summer of 2005, when the full-length single of the "Axel F" ringtone, which was created by members of the German production team Bass Bumpers and based on Harold Faltermeyer's instrumental theme for Beverly Hills Cop, peaked at #1 on UK singles charts and stayed there for several weeks. Europe was officially caught up in Crazy Frog mania.

Crazy Frog's foray into the United States began in late summer 2005, with the release of the ringtone, the "Axel F," single and later an entire Crazy Frog album called Crazy Frog Presents Crazy Hits. In 2006, Crazy Frog mania still held Europe in its grips, with toys and gadgets for sale and a possible television series in the planning stages. In the summer, Crazy Frog released its sophomore album, More Crazy Hits, with the craze showing no signs of abating.
