Creed music biography continued...
Creed formed in Tallahassee, Florida, in 1995, led by singer Scott Stapp and guitarist Mark Tremonti. The band later added bassist Brian Marshall and drummer Scott Phillips. Creed founded their own label, aptly called Blue Collar Records, and released their debut album, My Own Prison, in 1997. It was soon picked up by Wind-Up Records -- a fledgling label with distribution through Sony—and given a more polished, radio-friendly sound that resulted in four number one singles on the Billboard rock chart in "My Own Prison," "Torn," "What's This Life For," and "One." It wasn't until their next effort, however, that the band broke through to superstardom. 1999's Human Clay entered the charts at number one and sold a staggering ten million copies over the next two years. The album's leadoff single, "Higher," spent a record-breaking 17 weeks at number one on rock radio, and the follow-up singles "What If" and "With Arms Wide Open" topped the chart as well. This gave the band seven consecutive chart-topping hits on rock radio. "With Arms Wide Open" also gave Creed their first number one pop hit; several months later, the song won a Grammy for "Best Rock Song," cementing Creed's status as a band to be reckoned with.
In 2001, after a lineup change and a slew of controversies surrounding frontman Stapp, Creed came out with Weathered, which entered the charts at number one and sold five million copies in its first two months on the shelves. The first single, "My Sacrifice," was a Top Five pop hit that spent nine weeks atop the rock-radio charts. "One Last Breath" also demonstrated the band's crossover appeal by faring well on both the pop and rock charts. But following a car accident and a period of obvious drug abuse, Stapp's passion for the band began to wane and Creed officially split up in June 2004. Over the course of their career, the band had sold some 30 million records and garnered a devoted following that celebrates their music to this day.
