Crystals Biography |
The Crystals were one of the first all female groups that had a knack for making hit records. The group consisted of Barbara Alston, Dee Dee Kennibrew, Mary Thomas, Patricia Wright, and Myrna Gerrad. All of the women started their music careers singing in local church’s around Manhattan. While the group was recording demos in the Brill Building in Manhattan they were heard by label owner Phil Spector and signed them on the spot.

The girl’s then released one of their best works to date, “Uptown.” “Uptown” was a socially conscious record that reached 13 nationally and was very important for R&B and Pop music. Another socially conscious record the Crystals released was “He Hit Me,” a song about physical abuse.
Spector used his power as label owner and producer to change the Crystals line up constantly especially for the lead position. In 1963 Darlene Love sang lead on “He’s a Rebel,” a celebration of a tough street man. The Crystals grew increasingly unhappy with Spector and bought out their own contract. The group split up by 1966 and the Crystals flame had died out.
