Cyndi Lauper music biography continued...
how to play a guitar and started to write her own lyrics when she was twelve years old. Even at this young age, Lauper dyed her hair bizarre colors and wore clothes considered odd. In 1978, after years of trying to find herself and singing in cover bands, Lauper helped form a group called Blue Angel. The band earned a contract with Polydor and although there debut album was praised, sales were dismal, and the band broke up. In 1981, while singing in a local New York bar, Lauper met David Wolff, who took over as her manager and got her signed with Portrait Records, a subsidiary of Columbia Records. In October, 1983, She's So Unusual was released, and became a worldwide hit with such chartbusting singles as "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," "She Bop" and "Time After Time," which Lauper wrote and which has since become a pop standard covered by many different bands. Lauper spent 1984 touring and promoting She's So Unusual. By the end of the year, she was the first female to have four consecutive Billboard Hot 100 Top 5 hits from one album. The LP itself stayed in the Top 40 charts for more than 65 weeks and sold 16 million copies worldwide. In 1984, Lauper was voted by Ms. Magazine as one of its women of the year and was seen on the covers of Time and Newsweek magazines. The following year, she won the Grammy for Best New Artist, capping her rise to the top of pop's upper echelons.
.
Lauper released her second album True Colors in September, 1986. It reached number four on the Billboard 200. For this album, she increased her involvement both in production and songwriting. It contained three high-charting singles, including the title track, which become Lauper's second platinum number-one hit. However, the album wasn't as commercially successful as its predecessor. More disappointing releases followed. And, although she would never again reach the heights of success she had had with her first two albums, Lauper remains a respected and revered force in the pop music industry.
