D4L (Down 4 Life) has become one of the hottest, most innovative groups to hail from Atlanta. The members, Fa-bo, Mook-B, Stoney, and Shawty Lo embody "living the street life" in the Atlanta projects. Shawty Lo invested his own money into the group and put it all together in 2003. He wanted to make it big and two years was all it took to attain his goal.
Their debut album entitled Down For Life was released on November 8, 2005. The first single was "Betcha Can't Do It Like Me", however it was the hit "Laffy Taffy" that proved to be D4L's claim to fame. The tightly knit group believes in working together as a group and staying humble.
The hip hop group is recognized for being the originators of the new subgenre of Rap music called "snap". Snap emerges from Atlanta, Georgia and is similar to the Dirty South-styled rap "crunk". The snap subgenre is characterized by its finger-snapping and simple production methods that have stripped down the complexity of hip hop music. D4L has an ongoing feud and debate with rival Atlanta rap group Dem Franchize Boyz over claiming the creation of snap. However, the earliest example of snap was heard in the song "Southern Hospitality" by Atlanta rapper Ludacris.
D4L is signed to Mike Jones' record label, Ice Age Entertainment. The group is planning a re-release of Down for Life in the summer of 2006.
