Thomas Bangalter originally recorded under another name and when a reviewer derisively called one of their songs, "daft punk," they lifted it for the name of their new musical venture. The pair released their debut single, "The New Wave," in 1993 on the celebrated Soma label. Instantly hailed by the dance music press as the work of a new breed of house innovators, the single was followed by "Da Funk," the band's first true hit. The Daft Punk songs " Da Funk" and "Alive" were later included on duo's 1997 debut album Homework. The album was regarded as an innovative synthesis of techno, house, acid house and electro styles, and was widely acknowledged as one of the most influential dance music albums of the nineties.
After four long years of eagerly anticipating a follow-up to their groundbreaking debut, Daft Punk finally issued Discovery in March 2001, which was a departure for them musically and garnered a whole new set of fans. The live record Alive 1997 followed near the end of the year, and a by now predictable four-year wait preceded the release of Human After All in early 2005. One year later, the duo released a compilation, Musique, Vol. 1: 1993-2005, and in 2007 their second live record, Alive 2007. Daft Punk has consistently been known for adopting different personas over the years--During their Homework years, the duo would usually wear masks to hide their appearance. When not wearing disguises, they occasionally preferred to be replaced by animation (as they appeared in The Work of Director Michel Gondry DVD) or have their faces digitally obscured for press kits. But there is no hiding the fact that these two house music trailblazers will continue to set the music world on fire.
