Daniel Keaton Powter was born on February 25, 1971 in Vernon, British Columbia. He began to take violin lessons at an early age, often practicing while his mother accompanied him on the piano. The singer eventually picked up the piano in his teenage years realizing his vocation. He soon began singing and performing in high school bands. He later attended Grand McEwan College in Edmonton, Alberta studying music but eventually dropped out due to learning difficulties attributed to dyslexia. He moved to Vancouver and began working in a studio writing songs with producer Jeff Dawson who also previously worked with Elvis Costello.

In 2005, "Bad Day" was the Coca-Cola theme song for its ad campaign in Europe. The single proceeded to get heavy radio airplay in Europe peaking at number one in Germany, Italy and Ireland. On July 2, 2005, he performed at the Live 8 Concert in Berlin which was held to raise poverty awareness in Africa.

His self-titled American debut was in 2006. Seven weeks after the release of the album, "Bad Day" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Other singles "Jimmy Gets High", Free Loop", and "Lie To Me" have been released but have not followed the success of the first single. On April 1, 2006, Powter was named Best New Artist at the Canadian Juno Awards.

Daniel has made several television appearances and is known for sporting his trademark beanie hat. During an interview, he explains that the hat is worn to cover a large scar he was left with when he was hit by a car as a young child.
