career at the age of 18 as a singer when he was discovered by the orchestra Orquesta Expresiones. In 2001, he was one of the sixteen contestants in the television show Operación Triunfo, the Spanish version of American Idol. He came in second place, and it was due to his exposure on the show that he was offered a record deal with Vale Music. His first CD, Corazón Latino, was released in the late summer of 2002. Recorded in Miami and produced by Kike Santander, the CD was an instant success in the Spanish market, becoming the most popular debut album ever. In the summer of 2002, Bisbal undertook a sold out tour all through Spain in support of his new CD. In 2002 he received an award for best album of the year for Corazón Latino. At the Premios de la Música he was nominated for best new artist and at the Premios Amigo for best new artist and best album. In 2003, Bisbal's popularity began to soar outside Spain as well as he began to tour in Latin America, performing over 80 sold out concerts. In the same year, Corazon Latino went gold in Latin America and the U.S, single "Lloraré las penas" topped the Billboard Latin Tropical/Salsa charts and was number three on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks. In 2003, Bisbal received a Latin Grammy for best new artist and was nominated for best vocal pop album, capping an extraordinary beginning to his career.
In 2004, Bisbal released his second album, Bulería. A homage to his homeland of Spain, the album swiftly rose on the charts in Spain, Latin America and the U.S. On his next album, Premonición, Bisbal collaborated with such internationally-known as Tomatito, Vicente Amigo, Wisin & Yandel, Dan Warner, Lee Levin, and Jon Falcone. In 2008, he recorded a duet with Bajan singer Rihanna. The song, titled "Como Odio Amarte", is the Spanish version of Rihanna's hit single Hate That I Love You, and proves that vocal talent knows no boundaries.
