Texas, and was raised in Blue Springs, Missouri. Cook was the lead singer and guitarist of the band Axium from 1999 until 2006 while working various day jobs. The group won several accolades, but ultimately split up. Cook relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma, and released a solo album, which also scored some recognition in the local area. Cook auditioned for American Idol in Omaha, Nebraska, performing Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer." He originally did not plan to try out for the show as he was going on a trip overseas, but went along to support his brother (who did not make it to Hollywood) and then decided to try out himself. Cook performed "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You" by Bryan Adams, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar and was given the golden ticket, starting him on an incredible journey.

Although there was some rough going at the very beginning of the competition, Cook soon distinguished himself from the rest of the competitors by playing his electric guitar to rock arrangements of classic pop songs. One standout performance was of Michael Jackson's Billy Jean, which judge Simon Cowell described as "in a different league to anything we've heard on the season so far," and although he said he knew where the arrangement came from (Chris Cornell's remake of the Michael Jackson original), he concluded "that doesn't really matter." While Cook's arrangements for two Beatles' songs were credited to another band, Cook also supercharged the program with original arrangements for such tunes as of "Hello," "Little Sparrow," "Always Be My Baby," "All I Really Need Is You," "Baba O'Riley," "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing." In May 2008, Cook won the competition over David Archuleta with 56% of the votes. Soon after, Cook broke several Billboard chart records for the number of songs debuting on the Hot 100 in a given week. Cook is currently working with Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer, Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic and Jesse McCartney on his upcoming album.
