Death Cab For Cutie music biography continued...
Can Play These Songs With Chords, suggested there was a market for his smart, sensitive lyrics, singer/songwriter/guitarist Benjamin Gibbard formed the band in Bellingham, Washington in 1998—with bassist Nicholas Harmer, guitarist-organist Christopher Walla, and, eventually, crack drummer Michael Schorr. They signed with Seattle-based, Barsuk Records and released their debut album, Something About Airplanes, the same year. The album was a critical success and led to three more discs off the indie label-- We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes (2000), The Photo Album (2001) and the polished, hook-laden Transatlanticism (2003). This last effort garnered a lot of positive attention not only from critics, but consumers as well and DCFC found themselves a major success story when their music was selected to play throughout several episodes of the hit television series, The O.C. With their popularity at an all-time high, the bandmates issued a live disc, The John Byrd E.P., and later signed a major-label deal with Atlantic Records in November 2004. Plans was released the following summer and debuted at number four, yielding several hit singles including the acoustic ballad "I Will Follow You into the Dark." The album remained on the Billboard charts for nearly one year, earned a Grammy nomination and achieved platinum status, finally giving DCFC mainstream cred.
Death Cab returned in May 2008 with Narrow Stairs, a darker album that debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. The band proceeded to tour throughout the remainder of the year, while a deluxe version of Something About Airplanes (which was packaged with a recording of their very first show in Seattle) was released in November to introduce newer fans to Death Cab's early material. They continue to tour worldwide and record, taking 00's fans for the cab ride of a lifetime.
