Debbie Gibson music biography continued...

Gibson wrote her first song, "Make Sure You Know Your Classroom," at age five. She began playing the ukulele and taking piano lessons soon thereafter, including with the noted American pianist Morton Estrin, who also taught Billy Joel. Her parents turned the Gibson garage into a mini recording studio, as Gibson began to write and compose songs that won contests, and with them more exposure. Gibson was only fourteen when her parents solicited the help of producer Doug Breitbart, an entertainment lawyer who began to manage and instruct her. After enduring scores of rejections, Gibson was finally offered a deal by Atlantic. Her first single, "Only in My Dreams," began as a regional and dance club hit, then slowly climbed the national charts in the summer of 1987. Out of the Blue, her debut album, was released in the fall of 1987, and by the spring of 1988, it had reached the American Top Ten. The title track became a number-three hit that spring and it was followed by her first number one single, "Foolish Beat," making her the youngest artist ever to write, perform, and produce a number one single. By the end of 1988, Out of the Blue had gone triple platinum in the U.S., and had established Gibson as a pop phenom.

"Lost in Your Eyes," the first single from her second album, Electric Youth, became Gibson's biggest hit early in 1989. The tune held the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks. Gibson achieved an additional honor of having both a #1 single and album charting simultaneously. She also shared ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Award 1989 with Bruce Springsteen. Although subsequent albums did not fare as well, Gibson continued to record with Atlantic through 1995. She has since gone on to starring roles on Broadway and touring musicals, as well as independent film and television work. She continues to record, and reached the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart as high as #24 during 2006 in a duet with Jordan Knight titled "Say Goodbye." Certainly, Gibson has fulfilled the promise that everyone saw in her from an early age.
