Destiny’s Child is renowned as one of the most successful female R&B groups, having experienced continuous commercial success throughout the past few years. Despite several abrupt lineup changes and member feuds the group managed to sell over 50 million albums and singles during their 1997 to 2005 career span.

in 1992 and the group eventually became a quartet in 1993 with LeToya Luckett completing Destiny’s Child. The girls appeared prominently in the Houston club scene eventually opening for popular acts SWV, Dru Hill, and Immature. The group was signed to Elecktra Records in 1995 however was dropped two years later. In 1997, the girls were offered a deal with Columbia Records.
Their debut single “Killing Time” was featured on the Men In Black soundtrack in 1997. A year later their self-titled album was released gaining much attention with the lead single “No, No, No Part 2” featuring Wyclef Jean from The Fugees. The single sold over one million copies and placed first on the R&B charts. As the follow-up singles did not perform as well as the first, the group received heavy criticism as a one hit wonder act.
Destiny’s Child’s second album was to be a definite success with the input of major producers Kevin “She’kspere” Briggs, Rodney Jerkins, Dwayne Wiggins, Chad Elliot, Daryl Simmons, and Missy Elliot. The Writing’s on the Wall was released in the summer of 1997 entering the Billboard 200 at number six due to the mass success of the first single, “Bill, Bills, Bills”, which became a number one hit on the Hot 100. The second single “Bug-a-Boo” was also well received placing in the Top 40 while “Say My Name” scored extremely well on the charts occupying the number one spot for three weeks in 2000. However, a noticeable change had occurred when members LaTavia and LeToya were not present in the “Say My Name” video, and were replaced by Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin. The two sued both Matthew Knowles and their former bandmates for breach of partnership and fiduciary duties. The charges were eventually dropped in exchange for a settlement. Soon after the release of the fourth single “Jumpin’ Jumpin’”, Franklin departed from the group for personal reasons. Destiny’s Child eventually won two Grammy Awards for “Say My Name”, the first for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group and the second for Best R&B Song.
In October of 2000, the trio released the single “Independent Woman, Pt 1” featured on the Charlie’s Angels soundtrack. The song peaked at number one spending eleven weeks on the charts. The third album, Survivor, followed in 2001 entering the Billboard 200 at number one. The group sold a record breaking 663,000 copies in its first week, which is the highest ever for a female band, and went on to sell 12 million copies worldwide. The third single, “Bootylicious” became the group’s fourth number one hit on the Hot 100. Other notable hits on the album include “Survivor” as well as a rendition of the BeeGees’ original “Emotion”.
Following the success of Survivor, the girls committed to their own solo projects. Michelle Williams released her gospel album Heart To Yours which peaked at number one on the Top Gospel Albums Chart. She later issued a second, Do You Know, which also received much praise and attention. Kelly Rowland also experienced a number one hit with the single “Dilemma” featuring rapper Nelly. And made a film debut in the horror flick Freddy Vs. Jason. Meanwhile, Beyoncé appeared in several films notably Austin Powers in Goldmember. She later released her solo debut album Dangerously In Love which received incredible acclaim earning five Grammy Awards in 2004.
