on November 8, 1970 and grew up singing hymns in the St. Phillipo Baptist Church. She was just 13 when she got a job singing weekends at Mingles, one of the premier clubs in Kingston, and went on to perform at a number of high profile clubs throughout the island. Some of the demo tracks she had recorded came to the attention of Columbia Record's, which decided to feature her song "Stir It Up" on the 1993 soundtrack to the movie Cool Runnings. That brought her to the attention of Notorious B.I.G., who used her on his 1994 album Ready to Die, leading King to her own record contract with Sony's Work label. King's first single "Shy Guy", from her debut album Tougher Than Love, became a hit, reaching number thirteen on the Billboard Hot 100 and reaching gold status in the United States. The single also hit number two on the UK Singles Chart, as well as reaching number one on the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles chart going on to sell nearly three million singles worldwide. In 1997, King's second album Think Like a Girl entered the Billboard Top Reggae Albums chart at number one. King also scored a critical and commercial hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Hot Dance Club Play with her cover version of the song "I Say a Little Prayer" (originally recorded by Dionne Warwick in 1967), featured on the soundtrack to the film My Best Friend's Wedding, and establishing King as a major force on the R&B scene as well.

After taking a few years off to raise a family, King came out with her third album—2002's Respect. Released in the US in the summer of 2006, its first single, "Summer Breezin,'" receiving BET and VH1 video and urban radio airplay, and reconnected King with all of the fans she had cultivated over the years and with new listeners, too. One critic summed her up perfectly: "Diana King has the potential to penetrate inter-national barriers with a voice that cuts straight to the heart, crooning, rapping and belting her passionate message in the universal language of love."
