Dido music biography continued...
25, 1971, in London, England, to a literary agent and a poet. Her unusual name can be attributed to the African warrior queen she was named after. Dido and brother Rollo, who would later play in the popular band Faithless, found music early and Dido taught herself to play the recorder as a youngster. At age six she was accepted to the prestigious Guildhall School of Music. As she grew older, Dido started to perform at clubs with local bands. She wound up appearing on the debut album of her brother's band, Reverence, in 1996, which went on to sell 5 million copies and make Dido a star in the UK.
Dido's work with her brother's band helped propel her career, and she toured with her brother's group for the next 2 years, ultimately landing her own contract as a solo artist with Arista records. Dido's debut album, No Angel, was produced by Dido with the help of other contributors (including Rollo), and was released in mid-1999. The album spawned such hits as "Here With Me" (which was chosen as the theme song of the hit show, Roswell) and "Thank You" (which appeared on the soundtrack of the Gwyneth Paltrow film, Sliding Doors). Dido's big break, however, came when superstar rapper Eminem sampled her song "Thank You" on his track, "Stan," making Dido an instant success in the United States. Her sophomore album, Life For Rent was released in September 2003, and became one of the fastest selling albums in UK music history, debuting at number one in the UK and several other countries. It was in the top five in the United States. Life For Rent went onto to become the 4th biggest selling album of the 21st century in the UK. With a new album due out soon, the Grammy nominated Dido remains humble, showing fans that it's possible to be a pop star without having an oversized ego.
