Don Williams music biography continued...
Texas. His father was a mechanic, but his mother was musical and taught him how to play the guitar by the time he was twelve. After finishing high school, Williams formed his first band with a friend named Lofton Kline. They recruited another singer, Susan Taylor, and formed the Pozo-Seco Singers, a folk-pop group, in 1964. Handled by Bob Dylan's manager Albert Grossman, they had major pop hits in the U.S. with "Time," "I Can Make It With You" and "Look What You've Done," After the group disbanded in 1971 Williams moved to Nashville to pursue a career as a country songwriter, but before he knew it, he was signed with JMI as a solo artist, releasing "Don't You Believe" as his debut. It was one of several songs that Williams released which did not make a big impression on the charts, but in 1974 he had his big breakthrough with "We Should Be Together," which reached number five on the country charts. The single led to a contract with ABC/Dot, where his next single, "I Wouldn't Want to Live If You Didn't Love Me," reached number one in the summer 1974. For the remainder of the 70s, Williams would be one of country's brightest stars with a string of hit singles that earned him several honors in the country music world, but also crossed over into the pop charts and became international hits as well.
In the early 80s, Williams' output slowed considerably as he fought physical ailments, but he continued to score Top Ten hits. In fact, between 1974 and 1991, only four of his 46 charting singles didn't make the Top Ten. And though he switched labels a few times, his fans stuck with him and his streak of charting singles didn't come to the end until 1992's last Top Ten single, "Lord Have Mercy on a Country Boy." Although he continued to perform in the mid-'90s, Williams retired to his farm in Nashville, near the city that had made him king.
