Donna Lewis music biography continued...
6, 1973, in Cardiff, Wales, Donna Lewis began studying piano at the age of six. By her 14th birthday, she had begun writing songs and recording them on a portable cassette recorder. She studied classical composition at the Welsh College of Music and Drama, majoring in piano and flute, while continuing to flex her songwriting muscles. Following this she began performing in the evenings at piano bars and during the day recorded demos in a sophisticated studio she had constructed in her own home. In no time, she was performing throughout Europe and wound up inking a deal with Atlantic Records. The resulting Now In A Minute was a global phenomenon, with singles including "Without Love" and the smash hit "I Love You Always Forever." The single reached number five on the UK Singles Chart in 1996. The popularity of the song shot Lewis's debut album, Now in a Minute (1996), to platinum status in the United States, and led to brisk sales around the globe as well. Among the numerous honors Lewis received during 1996 and 1997, the singer/songwriter was nominated for an American Music Award in the pop/rock 'Favorite New Artist' category and was ranked by Billboard magazine as the #6 top new pop artist of 1996.
Lewis went on to record "At the Beginning" with Richard Marx for the 1997 film Anastasia. Her second LP, Blue Planet (1998), won critical acclaim, but it was largely overlooked by the public. Although it produced a minor hit in continental Europe, "I Could Be the One", and a U.S. number-one dance single, "Love Him", Lewis parted ways with Atlantic Records and independently produced her third LP, Be Still (2002), which featured her on an almost entirely acoustic set. During the early 2000s Lewis was featured as a guest vocalist on several trance music/house music recordings, but fortunately she never gave up on her solo career, releasing the critically acclaimed Pink in 2007 and showing fans that she hadn't lost her magic vocal touch.
