Donna Summer Biography |
Known as the “Queen of Disco,” Donna Summer ruled the 1970s with her special brand of pop/dance/rock that combined American soul and European synthesizer-based music to create an irresistible sound for partiers everywhere. Summer was born LaDonna Andre Gaines on December 31, 1948, and grew up in Boston's Mission Hill section. Part of a religious family, she first sang in her church's gospel choir, and as a teenager performed with a rock group called the Crow, soon after departing to New York City to seek fame and fortune on the stage. any to perform in the German version of the musical Hair, when she met producers/songwriters Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte. The three teamed up to produce the sensual 1975 single “Love to Love You Baby,” which became a big hit in Europe. Casablanca put the track out in America, where it climbed to number two on the singles charts. It became an international dance-club sensation when Moroder remixed the track into a 17-minute, side-long epic on the LP of the same name. Summer never looked back.
All in all, Summer has racked up fourteen top ten hits, four #1 singles, three platinum albums, five Grammy awards and twelve other Grammy nominations. She is the first solo female artist to have three #1 singles all in the same year (“McArthur Park,” “Hot Stuff” and “Bad Girls”) and she is the only artist to have three #1 double albums in a row (Live And More, Bad Girls and On The Radio). Musically, she diversified into pop and rock, while career-wise, she appeared in the disco dud, Thank God It's Friday (1978), for which the song, "Last Dance" won a Best Song Oscar, as well as numerous American TV music specials. Her career its zenith in 1980 with the release of the critically-acclaimed record, "The Wanderer", a diverse fusion of rock and dance which is still considered to be the forerunner of such range of artists as Billy Idol, Whitney Houston and Alanis Morissette. Except for the Bee Gees, Donna Summer’s longevity in the music business is unparalleled, but she will always be the original disco diva.
