Dr. Dre music biography continued...
at house parties and clubs around South-Central Los Angeles while still a teen. Wearing a Doctor's mask when he preformed, he called himself Dr. Dre, Dre being a nickname from André. In 1986, Dre met Ice Cube. Instantly becoming good friends, the two MCs began writing songs for Ruthless Records, a label started by former drug pusher 'Eazy-E'. Eazy formed N.W.A, an acronym for Niggaz With Attitude and in 1989, Dre and his posse broke out with the album, Straight Outta Compton, a vicious, violent, and misogynistic record that became an underground hit with virtually no support from radio, the press, or the still hip-hop-free MTV. N.W.A. became notorious for their violent lyrics. Amidst disputes, Dre left NWA and discovered Snoop Dogg, with whom he recorded his 1992 solo album debut, The Chronic. Thanks to the singles "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang," "Dre Day," and "Let Me Ride," The Chronic, off Death Row Recordsm was a multi-platinum, Top Ten smash, and the entire world of hip-hop changed with it. For the next four years, it was virtually impossible to hear mainstream hip-hop that wasn't affected in some way by Dre and his patented West Coast G-funk.
The Death Row dynasty held strong until the spring of 1996, when Dre left the label to form another record company Aftermath. The first record Dre released from Aftermath, Dr. Dre presents was only moderately successful, and Dre slipped off the radar a bit as friends and colleagues were either sent to jail or murdered. It wasn't until he began working on his 2001 album, and discovering an underground MC by the name of Eminem that Dre would make his comeback. During the rest of the 2000s, Dre focused his career on production for other artists, while occasionally contributing vocals in other artists' songs. Rolling Stone named him among the highest-paid performers of 2001and 2004. Dr. Dre also had acting roles in the 2001 films The Wash and Training Day. His latest solo studio album, Detox, was set to be released in 2008, capping yet another decade of innovation at the top the hip hop game.
