Dr.Alban music biography continued...
Kuti and James Brown. He later moved to Stockholm, Sweden, where he began studying dentistry. To help finance his medical career, he started working as a DJ in the well known Stockholm club 'Alphabet Street'. His reputation spread quickly and he became widely known as the DJ who sang along to the records he put on the turntable. He was soon discovered by DJ Rene, but finished his studies and even opened his own dentistry practice before turning back to music. In 1990, he met Denniz PoP from the SweMix label. Together with Denniz and Rap-Queen Leila K, his first record, "Hello Africa" - his declaration of love for his African home - broke all records. Alban Nwapa took the stage name Dr. Alban, a nod to his dental studies. His debut album Hello Africa sold roughly 1 million copies world-wide. Dr. Alban's success was eclipsed one year later when his second album, One Love, which contained the chart topping "It's My Life," a tune that sold 1.6 million copies and was used as background music for a Tampax commercial.
Following the success of One Love, Dr. Alban followed with the albums Look Who's Talking and Born In Africa. His mega-hit from this period, "No Coke," was used to illustrate an anti-drug campaign in Sweden. After a re-release of No Coke, Dr Alban confirmed his Euro dance style with his hits Look Who's Talking and Let The Beat Go On. He created his own record company Dr. Records and became a producer for many of Sweden's top artists like La Cream and Daddy Showkey. Dr. Alban continued to record in the new millennium, releasing Prescription (2000) and Back to the Basics (2007). In 2008, he released a single with pop-star of the 90's Haddaway, entitled "I love the 90's," which gave a shout out to some of the best dance hits of the Euro years, including, "What is Love," "All That She Wants" and, of course, his own, "It's My Life." Dr. Alban's life certainly hasn't ended up as he had planned and for the many fans of his music career who hate going to the dentist, that is a good thing.
