Dru Hill music biography continued...
buddies Mark "Sisqó" Andrews, Larry "Jazz" Anthony, and James "Woody Rock" Green, the group was named for the member's Baltimore, Maryland neighborhood, Druid Hill. Dru Hill's big break came in 1996, when manager Haqq Islam arranged for them to perform at the Impact Convention. Soon after, the group were signed to Island Records's "Island Black" division and immediately began recording their debut album. The self-titled Dru Hill album was released in November 1996, and became a gold-selling album. The group's first single, "Tell Me", was featured on the soundtrack to the Whoopi Goldberg film Eddie, and was a Top 5 R&B hit in the United States. Other Top five singles off the album included "In My Bed" and "Never Make a Promise."1998's album Enter the Dru spawned more hits including "How Deep is Your Love" (Pop #3), a hip hop styled track which was included on the soundtrack to the Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker film Rush Hour and ,"This Is What We Do" featuring a guest rap from Method Man. The two tracks powered the album to #2 on the Billboard charts, and by 1999, it had sold two million copies.
After Island merged with Def Jam to become The Island Def Jam Music Group in mid-1999, all four members signed new contracts with Def Jam's R&B imprint Def Soul. But after Enter the Dru, the group pursued solo projects for the next four years. In 2002, they returned as a group with a new member, Skola, and released Dru World Order. Most of the album's tracks featured Sisqó, Jazz, Woody, and Scola sharing the leads, including the lead single "I Should Be..."."I Should Be..." which was a Top 30 pop hit and a Top 10 R&B hit. By 2005, Dru Hill had been released from their Def Soul contract and had disappeared from public view. A reunion in 2008 was aborted due to internal dissension amongst the band members, but fans still hold out hope that the quintet from Baltimore will reunite once again.
