Eddie Murphy music biography continued...

April 3, 1961, in Hempstead, New York, Murphy, by his mid-teens, was already working as a professional stand-up in Long Island clubs. By the time he was 17, he was performing at Manhattan's famed Comic Strip and soon after mounted a club tour of the East Coast. Tapped for a recurring role on Saturday Night Live in 1980, Murphy soon became a cast regular. In 1982, Murphy released his debut comedy album, a self-titled live effort that was controversial in its depiction of Asians, women, and gays. But with the release of the movie 48 Hours, nothing could stop the Murphy juggernaut and in 1983 he issued the album Eddie Murphy: Comedian, which reached the Top 40. After this comedy album, Murphy switched gears and decided to try his hand at pop music, recording the tune "Party All the Time" which was produced by Rick James and featured on Murphy's 1985 debut album How Could It Be. The album also included a minor follow-up R&B hit in the title track, a duet with vocalist Crystal Blake. In 1989, Murphy released a follow-up album called So Happy, which yielded the critically lambasted singles "Put Your Mouth on Me" and "'Til the Money's Gone." Murphy recorded the album Love's Alright in the early 1990s. He performed in a music video of the single "Whatzupwitu", featuring Michael Jackson. He also recorded a duet with Shabba Ranks called "I Was a King", which was also panned. Not to be deterred, in later years, Murphy performed several songs in the Shrek film franchise. In the first film, he performed a version of "I'm a Believer" in the film's final scene; in Shrek 2 he performed Ricky Martin's hit "Livin' La Vida Loca" along with co-star Antonio Banderas. There could not have been a better tribute to Murphy's life.
