Eiffel 65 music biography continued...
Maurizio Lobina and DJ Gabry Ponte, met in Torino, Italy, in the early 90s at the Bliss Corporation -the home of numerous successful dance music producers, acts, and labels, founded by producer Massimo Gabutti. In this nurturing environment, they individually turned out several top ten European dance floor hits. When the three were united in the late 90s, with their group's name randomly generated by a computer program, they were destined for greatness. And, indeed, they soon after came out with single Blue (Da Ba Dee), which was a smash in Europe and also became a top ten hit in the United States, peaking at #6 on the Billboard charts. The album it was off, Europop received a top five placing and sold over two million copies based upon the success of Blue and other tunes, including "Move Your Body" and "Too Much of Heaven." Eiffel 65's second album, Contact!, was released in 2001 and while it did not sell as well as Europop, it did enjoy a fair share of success in Europe. "Lucky (In My Life)" was the first single on the album, followed by the partially-Italian song "80's Stars". Following Contact with Eiffel 65, the group continued to enjoy success in their native Italy with such songs as "Viaggia Insieme a Me", "Voglia di Dance All Night", and "Cosa Resterà (In A Song)".
In early March 2005 the group's DJ, Gabry Ponte, left the group to be able to focus on his solo career and Lobina and Jey continued the dance pop tradition under a new name, Bloom 06. At the time of the split, no other Italian pop or dance group before or since had ever achieved such sales in the USA. "It's important that people get a positive message," Jey has said in describing Eiffel 65's success. "We don't throw something down and criticize, we want to think and use our mind to fix things. Things should be built rather than be taken apart. There should be something to be happy about." For international club goers that something was Eiffel 65.
