and put together a lineup that consisted of Miss Black California Cindy Herron, Maxine Jones, Dawn Robinson, and Terry Ellis. En Vogue's debut album, Born to Sing, was released in 1990 and yielded the pop crossover smash "Hold On," which peaked at number two and powered the album to platinum status. The group's sophomore album, Funky Divas, did even better, inviting critical kudos for brilliantly tackling a variety of genres from rap to reggae, and launching the hit singles My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)," "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" (both covers of songs written by Curtis Mayfield), and "Free Your Mind." All reaching the Top Ten, these tunes paved the way for the album to go multi-platinum. En Vogue were in the Top Ten again in 1993, backing Salt-N-Pepa on their hit "Whatta Man" and cementing their reputation as a supremely talented ensemble.
In early 1997, En Vogue recorded "Don't Let Go (Love)," a single that went to #2 when it was released on the soundtrack to the movie Set It Off. Soon after, the band released their third album, EV3. The group's first compilation, The Best of En Vogue, was released in the summer of 1999, while 2000 saw the release of Masterpiece Theater. En Vogue was subsequently dropped from their label for slower than anticipated sales, and went through some line-up changes, emerging in 2001 with The Very Best of En Vogue. Though the group would go on to endure more fluctuations in their lineup, they would continue to tour and record on independent labels, fulfilling the long-term promise they had held from the beginning.
