to pursue her singing dream. While working at a publishing firm, her talent was discovered and she was immediately asked to become a demo singer for the company. Meanwhile, she became a harmony vocalist for singer/songwriter/producer Gary Burr and during a performance was noticed by a Warner Brothers executive who offered her a record deal.
Her debut album Take Me as I Am appeared in 1993 and topped the charts with the number one hit lead single “Wild One”. A cover of Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart” followed also peaking in the first spot on the Country singles chart. Immediate surgery on her vocal cords delayed the recording of her second album, It Matters to Me, which eventually saw release in 1995. The popular title track became her fourth number one hit single, while the album performed magnificently surpassing sales of three million. While promoting her album on the Spontaneous Combustion Tour of 1996, she met country star Tim McGraw, whom she later married on October 6. In 1997, the two scored their first Top Ten pop hit with the duet “It’s Your Love” off of Tim’s Everywhere album. The song also spent six weeks at number one on the Billboard Country Singles chart. Faith, the more pop influenced album, was released in 1998 spawning the major hit “This Kiss” which peaked at number one on the Country chart and at number seven on the Hot 100.
Becoming a major celebrity, Hill signed an endorsement deal with CoverGirl appearing in their advertisements while her fourth album, Breathe, was released. The number one hit title track became Faith’s signature song and was recognized as the Hot 100 song of the year in 2000 following its remarkable 53 weeks on the chart. Breathe earned Grammy Awards for Best Country Album, Best Female Country Vocal Performance, and Best Female Collaboration with Vocals for “Let’s Make Love”. Prior to the release of Cry in 2002, Hill contributed to the How the Grinch Stole Christmas soundtrack with “Where Are You Christmas?” and to the Pearl Harbor film with “There You’ll Be” which became a number one hit on the Adult Contemporary chart. Cry debuted at number one the Pop and Country chart, however the accompanying singles did not receive as much exposure as her previous work. The title track “Cry” won a Grammy Award for Best Female Vocal Performance in 2003. In the summer of 2004, Hill made her film debut starring in The Stepford Wives alongside Nicole Kidman, Matthew Broderick, Bette Midler, Glenn Close, and Christopher Walken.
Following a three year recording hiatus, Faith issued Fireflies which peaked at number one on both the Billboard 200 and Country Album charts. The lead single “Mississippi Girl” became a number one country single while the album was certified double platinum. In April 2006, Faith and Tim embarked on their second co-headlining Soul II Soul tour which comprised of 75 dates across the US. Hill is allegedly releasing a Christmas album in the Fall of 2006 and is expected to issue a second greatest hits compilation in the near future.
