formerly of The Black Seeds, Video Kid, and Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra, and Jemaine Clement formerly of The Humourbeasts, met in 1998 while studying film and theatre in college in Wellington, New Zealand. They pulled together an act and started honing it at local comedy and folk clubs, building up a cult following which led to a 2002 performance at the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe Festival. When they returned to the fest in 2003, they were nominated for the Perrier Comedy Award, the genre's highest honor. Between performances the duo recorded their first album, Folk the World, which contained such signature pieces as "Hotties" and "Something for the Ladies". In 2005, BBC Radio 2 broadcast their first radio series. Largely improvised, it featured Rob Brydon as their narrator, rhys darby as their manager and Jimmy Carr as a devoted fan called Kipper. Also in 2005, HBO gave the group a special on their Friday night half-hour stand-up comedy series One Night Stand. In 2007, the duo came out with the album The Distant Future, which won a Grammy award for best comedy album. Also, in 2007, HBO launched a television series called Flight of the Conchords, based on the duo's struggles to achieve success. The show currently features rhys darby as their manager Murray, Kristen Schaal as obsessive fan Mel, Arj Barker as their friend Dave and Eugene Mirman as their landlord. The duo have also kept their hands in recording, issuing Flight of the Conchords (2008) and I Told You I Was Freaky (2009). With success in all artistic mediums, Flight of the Conchord's talent is clearly nothing to laugh about.
