their start in 2002 when lead vocalist Lacey Mosley, guitarists Sameer Bhattacharya and Jared Hartmann, bassist Pat Seals and drummer James Culpepper began to cultivate a dedicated cult following playing gigs in and around their hometown of Temple, Texas. They also opened for NuMetal bands such as Evanescence, Flickerstick, TRUSTcompany, Saliva and Earshot. The quintet signed for Octone Records who released a 6-track EP in mid-2005; Flyleaf then locked themselves in a Los Angeles recording studio for two months and finally emerged with their self- titled debut album in late September 2005, which received critical raves and saw the release of the hit radio single, "I'm So Sick," as well as the other hit singles, "Fully Alive" and "All Around Me." The band won an online poll on yahoo.com and was named Yahoo!'s Who's Next band of the month in March 2006. and they were named MTV's artist of the week on December 24, 2007.



In 2007 Flyleaf toured with Three Days Grace and throughout Australia with the Australian Soundwave Festival, and also toured Europe with Stone Sour and Forever Never. In the spring of 2007, Flyleaf headlined their Justice & Mercy Tour which first featured Skillet and Dropping Daylight. Later on they did a second leg of the tour which featured Sick Puppies, Kill Hannah and Resident Hero. Flyleaf joined the Family Values Tour in 2007. In addition, the music video for "I'm So Sick" appeared briefly in the 2007 film Live Free or Die Hard. Also a remix of the song "I'm So Sick" is on the Soundtrack to the movie Resident Evil: Extinction. They were named MTV's Artist of the Week on December 24, 2007. "I used to be in a really negative band, and that seemed to almost fuel my emptiness because that's what the songs were about," lead singer Lacey Mosley has been quoted as saying. "That's why I think what we're doing is important because there needs to be something heavy out there that has a positive message so people see that it's possible to get through the worst situations." So far their positive message is resonating with millions of fans.
