Nirvana, drummer David Grohl went out on his own and recorded a solo album got a tremendous reception in the music industry. Instead of embarking on a full-fledged solo career, Grohl decided to form a band. Through his wife he met Nate Mendel, ex-bassist for Sunny Day Real Estate. Mendel and ex-Sunny Day drummer, William Goldsmith, came on board while former Germs and Nirvana guitarist Pat Smear rounded out the lineup. The band, named Foo Fighters after a World War II secret force that allegedly researched UFOs, signed a contract with Capitol Records. The band's self-titled debut, consisting solely of Dave Grohl's solo recordings, was released in July1995. It was an immediate hit in America, as "This Is a Call" garnered heavy alternative and album rock airplay. By early 1996, the album was certified platinum in the U.S. as the Foos broke out of the shadow of Nirvana and established themselves as a musical force to be reckoned with.



Following the success of their debut album, the band suffered from creative differences and the lineup changed several times. Nevertheless, One by One, the group's most polished production, appeared in late 2002. The album won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2004 and gave the Foo Fighters their first UK #1 album and a #3 peak in the U.S. It was followed by 2005's In Your Honor, which narrowly missed the top of Billboard's album chart. Echoes, Silence, Patience Grace came next and became the band's fourth to have a song reach the top of the Modern Rock Tracks, with "The Pretender." The album won the 2008 Grammy for Best Rock Album and "The Pretender" won for Best Hard Rock Performance. The album was also nominated for Album of the Year, while "The Pretender" was also nominated for Record of the Year and Best Rock Song. Clearly, the Foos have proven themselves to be a mega-talented band in their own right.
