Some of his 52 number one hits include "Fool hearted memory", "Let's Fall to Pieces Together", "You Know Me Better Than That", "I Cross My Heart", "Easy Come Easy Go", "I Just Want to Dance With You", and "Living and Living Well" among many. Born in Poteet, Texas on May 18, 1952, "King George" developed a love for country music while fronting his high school rock band. Shortly after dropping out of University, he was enlisted in the US Army and while completing his military service performed in the army-sponsored band Rambling Country. In 1975 he enrolled at Southwest Texas State University, graduating with an agriculture degree in 1979. There he joined the Ace in the Hole Band and played gigs around south and central Texas. The band recorded a few singles for the independent label D, however they never amounted to anything. Through a connection, Strait landed an audition with a few executives from MCA Records and was immediately signed in 1980.

His debut album Strait Country was released in 1981 featuring the singles "Unwound", "Down and Out", and "Fool Hearted Memory" marking the beginning of his growing fame. As one of the highest selling country artists in the 1980s, he experienced a successive amount of number one, platinum selling albums throughout his career, notably Right or Wrong, Ocean Front Property, If You Ain't Lovin' (You Ain't Livin'), and Carrying Your Love With Me. Despite the invasion of pop country during the 1990s, Strait kept delivering hits rarely deviating from his familiar sound. His 1995 box set, Strait Out of the Box became the second highest selling with over 8 million sold in the US alone. The George Strait Country Music Festival began in the late 1990s and has become one of the largest grossing annual music events. The tour which comprises of dates across North America features some of country music's favorite artists. In 2006, George was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. The singer is expected to release his 34th album It Just Comes Naturally on October 3, 2006 featuring his current single "Give it Away".

Aside from his music profession, Strait experimented with acting appearing in the films, The Soldier in 1982, The Horse Whisperer in 1998, Grand Champion in 2002, and took on the lead role in Pure Country in 1992. A quiet musician, who rarely embraces interviews, George resides with his wife on a Southwestern Texas ranch near San Antonio and spends much of his time off of the road with his family.
