Gerald Levert music biography continued...

Ohio, Gerald and his father recorded their first single, entitled "I'm Still," on the independent Tempre label. The outing demonstrated that Gerald was as gifted as his dad, and led to contract with Atlantic Records. Initially, Gerald recorded with the O'Jays, gleaning five number one singles, seven Top Ten singles, and four Top 20 singles on the Billboard R&B charts, including the number one single "Casanova," which also peaked at number four on the Billboard pop charts In 1991, Gerald released his solo debut album, Private Line. The title track yielded his first number one single as a solo artist on the Billboard R&B charts. The following year, Gerald came back with a duet with his father and scored another number one single with "Baby Hold on to Me" and the number three single "School Me." Interested in maintaining a presence on the pop charts as well, Gerald teamed with pop producer David Foster, who handed him the tune "I Swear." It would go on to become a Top 20 hit on the both the pop and R&B charts. Levert joined with Foster again for "She'd Give Anything," which reached the Top 30 on the pop charts and #4 on the R&B side, confirming Gerald's great appeal to the R&B audience.

In 1997, Gerald added another great accomplishment to his musical resume, joining forces with R&B vocalists Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill under the acronym LSG to release the hit single "My Body." As a solo act, he released Love & Consequences the year following, returning in 1999 with G. He remained incredibly prolific through the next half decade, releasing a new album annually and landing in the Soul and Pop 10 with each disc. In 2005, Gerald compiled a number of his strongest duets with other artists as well as songs with LSG and a few new recordings on the CD Voices. Shortly after completing a personal memoir with his father, as well as another album, Gerald died on November 10, 2006, at the age of 40 from an accidental overdose of prescription and non-prescription drugs. He left behind a rich musical legacy.
