Girls Aloud music biography continued...

Roberts, and Kimberley Walsh, met after they were selected by audience votes to form a girl group, then pitted against an audience-selected boy group, in 2002 reality British TV series, Popstars: The Rivals. Their debut single, Sound Of The Underground, was released in December 2002 and stayed at number1 in the UK charts for four weeks. According one critic, "the single's mock-a-billy beat and attitudinal power-pop stance made a refreshing change from the usual manufactured pap." Another single, "No Good Advice," went to number 2 on the British charts, and ushered in the album, Sound of the Underground, which debuted at number 2 on the U.K. album charts. Two more singles followed that year, the ballad "Life Got Cold," which reached number 3 in the charts and "Jump," an energetic cover of The Pointer Sisters song, which featured on the soundtrack to the 2003 film, Love Actually. It reached number 3 in the charts, helping to buoy sales of the debut album which went platinum after a re-issue at the end of the year. Despite some personal setbacks, the girls came together again in 2004 to prove they were no flash in the pan with What Will Neighbors Say, which yielded several more hit singles and consolidated Girls Aloud's success.

At the start of 2005, the band were at the height of their fame, picking up awards for sexiest women, a Glamour magazine gong for Band Of The year and a Brit Awards nomination. In December the girls released their third album, Chemistry, which was powered along by several more hit singles. Described by one critic as "quirky, modern and dripping with attitude," it found the girls experimenting with a variety of genres that further endeared them to their fans. They continued to record, and in 2007 Guinness World Records listed them as "Most Successful Reality TV Group." They also hold the record for "Most Consecutive Top Ten Entries in the UK by a Female Group" in the 2008 edition, with 15 consecutive top tens from "Sound of the Underground" in 2002 through to "Walk This Way" in 2007. For anyone who ever doubted it, this demonstrated that the girls are the real deal.
