Gnarls Barkley music biography continued...

and peaking at number one in the UK while quickly becoming a major international hit. The group, a collaboration involving DJ and producer Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton) and rapper/singer Cee-Lo (aka Thomas Calloway) originated in 2003 and is recognized for their innovative sound and intriguing performances.
Prior to the emergence of Gnarls Barkley, Danger Mouse received major praise for the notorious Grey Album, the controversial project that combines Jay-Z's vocals from the Black Album with instrumental samples derived from The Beatles' White Album. The record was a major classic among hip hop fans and mixing enthusiasts, however its distribution was suppressed due to unauthorized usage and sampling. This project eventually caught the interest of Blur frontman and Gorillaz co-creator Damon Albarn which led to Danger's work on the Gorillaz album, Demon Days. Calloway, a rapper from Atlanta is renowned as a member of the group Goodie Mob and for his solo work as Cee-Lo Green. Although the two met in the late 1990s, they only began working together around the time of Danger Mouse's release Ghetto Pop Life. After creating several recordings, "Crazy" was leaked out onto the internet and became a huge hit topping the British digital distribution charts.
Since the emergence of St. Elsewhere, Gnarls Barkley has made numerous appearances performing on MTV, at Lollapalooza in Chicago, and at the 02 Wireless Festival in London. The duo is renowned for appearing in costume (usually as film characters) when performing, or for any other publicity in general. The mystery of their name has become a highly debatable topic as there are several explanations circulating. There are rumors that the name was derived without a conscious effort or meaning, while other sources mention the band to be named after an actual individual.
