The group, a collaboration involving DJ and producer Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton) and rapper/singer Cee-Lo (aka Thomas Calloway) originated in 2003 and is recognized for their innovative sound and intriguing performances.
Prior to the emergence of Gnarls Barkley, Danger Mouse received major praise for the notorious Grey Album, the controversial project that combines Jay-Z's vocals from the Black Album with instrumental samples derived from The Beatles' White Album. The record was a major classic among hip hop fans and mixing enthusiasts, however its distribution was suppressed due to unauthorized usage and sampling. This project eventually caught the interest of Blur frontman and Gorillaz co-creator Damon Albarn which led to Danger's work on the Gorillaz album, Demon Days.
