Heatwave music biography continued...
various changes in personnel and finally settled in England as a septet featuring vocalist brothers Johnny and Keith Wilder and keyboardist/songwriter Rod Temperton. This nucleus of artists also courted band members from England, Czechoslovakia and Spain, making them a truly international outfit. Heatwave garnered a strong following in Europe, and in 1976 released their international debut-- Too Hot to Handle. The album's lead single, "Boogie Nights," became an international #1 hit and one of the iconic songs of the disco era. Heatwave followed it with the poignant ballad, "Always and Forever," which has continued to be one of the most popular wedding songs of the last three decades. In 1978, Heatwave continued their chart topping ways with Central Heating, which yielded the Top Five hit "Groove Line," as well as the popular "Mind Blowing Decisions." Heatwave was getting ready to release their next album, Hot Property, when lead singer Johnny Wilder became paralyzed from an auto accident and Rod Temperton started to take a less active role in songwriting for the group, as he went on to pen some classics for other artists. Still, Heatwave rebounded and released Candles in 1982, which spawned two more hits—"Gangsters of the Groove" and "Posin' til Closin," proving that the group hadn't lost their funky, cosmopolitan touch.
Heatwave broke up in the late 80s as their popularity waned. Keith Wilder re-formed the group with some old and some new members in the early 90s, and the group has toured regularly, also recording a 1997 album, Live and the Greek Theater, which contained classics as well as new songs. Heatwave continues to tour to this day on the oldies disco circuit with such other high profile 70s groups as The Village People and Gloria Gaynor, making for one, big nostalgic party.
